NOW is the time to visit if you can,in order to catch some autumn colours!  (Photos below are taken by Helen of Explore Kumamoto)

Helen from :Explore Kumamoto visited Kurokawa recently and wrote:

“Autumn is in full swing at Kurokawa Onsen, the maple trees are turning red and the golden ginkgo leaves are already falling. This is one of the most beautiful seasons to visit Kurokawa and this year is the best chance you’ll get to enjoy the colours of autumn without the usual hordes of visitors and bathers. Yesterday afternoon (Nov 9th)  it was blissfully quiet and just beautiful.”

Helen also noted that most of the shops were open despite few visitors,so you can still do a spot of shopping for souvenirs and snacks as well as enjoying a dip.

Resident in Kyushu for over 20 years and fortunate to be living in this beautiful corner of Aso close to a number of onsens including Kurokawa, which I love to visit with friends or my guests from overseas. Keeping this semi-official blog in English for the Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Association now gives me the perfect excuse...I just HAVE to try all the (public outdoor) baths I possibly can!

  1. Thanks for sharing your video……..but it made me miss Japan even more!
So sad I could not visit this year because of the pandemic, hopefully I can stay twice as long next year.
Last year I went to an Onsen about 1 hour from Akiruno-shi, from the outdoor Onsen you could lay back and view a temple on the top of the mountain in front of you. I am still wondering how people got up there! I cannot remember the name of it, and English was a little difficult with the person that drove me there!
